October is a month of many celebrations. Among them is one that brings smiles to pasta lovers all around the world – National Pasta Month! It’s a time to indulge in the comforting, versatile, and mouthwatering world of pasta. While this dish is beloved globally, there’s no denying that Italian pasta holds a special place in the hearts (and stomachs) of many. That’s why in honor of one of our favorite foods, one of your favorite restaurants is exploring the history of Italian pasta, along with many other fascinating facts!

A Brief History of Italian Pasta

The origins of pasta are somewhat debated, but there’s strong evidence to suggest that it was the Italians who perfected this beloved dish. The history of Italian pasta can be traced back to thousands of years ago in ancient Rome, where a dish called “lagane” was made from wheat dough and water. These early versions of pasta were not too different from what we enjoy today.

During the Arab rule of Sicily from the 9th to the 13th century, the Arabic technique of drying pasta in the sun was introduced. This process made pasta easier to store and transport, leading to its widespread popularity.

As time passed, different regions of Italy began to create their own pasta shapes and recipes. This resulted in the incredible variety we have today. From the long strands of spaghetti in Naples to the unique orecchiette in Puglia, Italy’s regional diversity is truly impressive.
